Prior to that they did not have a written language. They claim having 2000 years of history, yet their oldest literature dates from the end of the 19th century. Name of the Republic of Azerbaijan is a misnomer, because it is the name of the old north-western province of Iran, which they have appropriated and claim as their own. It is claimed that the historic Greater Armenia, as mentioned by old Greek and other ancient historians has been invented by Stalin in 1950s, in order to make Armenia an important country.
They insist that Azerbaijan as a country has existed over 2000 years, while the truth is that the country, located north of the Iranian border was born in 1918. They claim that Armenians are newcomers in the South Caucasus, while the Azerbaijanis and Turks have been living in the region for thousands of years. There are certain aspects of Armenian history, geography and culture, which, our Turkic speaking neighbours are constantly and consistently present incorrectly and completely falsified, in order to discredit Armenia.
